Three little villages, Gobindpur, Sutanati and Kalikata were bought by the British East India Company to create Kolkata - a strategic British colonial trade post in the year 1686.
Kolkata got its name from the ancient temple of Goddess Kali located at Kalighat on the banks of River Hoogly. This sacred shrine is considered to be one of the 52 sacred Shaktipeeths in India.
Described as the 'City of Joy' by celebrated author Dominique Lapierre. Kolkata's identity began with a colonial trade center and eventually graduated to that of the capital of British India.
In fact Fort William was the first ever fort that was constructed in this region.
