Located at a distance of 165 kilometers from Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur has an interesting history. Govinda, the sun of the great Hindu king Prithvi Raj Chauhan established his stronghold in this region. Later the area was captured by Rana Kumbha who presented it to his son. In the years to come Sawai Madhopur was ruled by different Rajput kings and Mughal emperors.
At a certain point of time in history Sawai Madhopur became the hunting preserve of maharaja Sawai Singh II of Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
Ranthambhore is known for its tiger population. Besides tigers, other wild animals such as wild boar, sambhar, chital, chinkara, langur, peafowl, hyena, leopard, jackal, sloth bears, jungle cats et al find a natural home in the jungles of Ranthambhore.
