In the year 1610, the city of Aurangabad was set up on the site of a village, Khirki by Malik Ambar, the Prime Minister of Murtaza Nizam Shah II. In 1626 when Fateh Khan, Malik Ambar's son turned successor, the city was given the name of 'Fatehpur'.
