A holy pilgrimage in Tamil Nadu, Kanyakumari gets its name from an ancient legend according to which Princess Kanya (an incarnation of goddess Parvati) did a penance so that she could wed Lord Shiv, but for some reason the union could not happen. Kanya Devi wowed never to marry and remain a virgin all her life.
There's a temple erected in her memory and this region came to be known as Kanyakumari.

See the famous Vivekananda Rock that is supposedly the spot where the great scholar and saint Vivekananda meditated. A number of Hindu pilgrims travel to this site.
The Fort of Vattakottai or the Circular Fort commands brilliant view of the sea and is an ideal place for bathing.
See the Thanumalayan Temple that is located at a distance of 13 kilometers from Kanyakumari or Cape Camorin. Tour Udayagiri Fort, built by King Marthanda Varma that is located at a distance of 34 kilometers from Kanyakumari.
Also tour the Padmanabhapuram Palace that was constructed by the rulers of Travancore.
The nearest airport is at the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram (80-km), which is well connected with national and International flights. From Thiruvananthapuram you can take a taxi or bus to Kanyakumari.
The place is well connected by train services with all the places in the country.
Express trains connect the Kanyakumari with northern cities of India like Jammu and Delhi.
Kanyakumari is also connected by regular bus services with Thiruvananthapuram, Chennai, Trichy, Madurai, Tuticorin, Pondicherry, Bangalore, Mandapam (Rameshwaram), Nagercoil, Tiruchendur, Tiruvelveli, etc
