A world heritage site, Bharatpur is a manmade wildlife sanctuary that was accorded the status of a national park in the year 1982. Bharatpur National Park is also known as the Keoladeo National Park after the ancient Shiva temple located within the park.
The Ajan Dam was dug in 1760 to protect Bharatpur from floods during monsoons. This led to the creation of a massive depression on land that got filled with rainwater and turned into the Keoladeo Lake - a haven for water birds.
Extended on 22 square kilometers of jungles, Bharatpur plays host to exotic migratory birds every winter. The indigenous bird population is also an impressive list that charms. Spot birds like the Siberian crane, pelicans, warblers, shanks, buntings, larks, pitpits, wagtails, wheaeaters, waterfowl, geese, eagles, darters, storks, spoonbills et al.
